As an organization with a vision to transform healthcare, the Greenville Health System (GHS) is committed to leadership development. Through a blended learning format, all new managers in the System, whether those who are promoted from within and new to management, or those who have years of experience, yet new to GHS, participate in Management Orientation.
GHS identified a list of competencies critical for successful leadership. Management Orientation addresses the following competencies:
Meeting Individual Manager Needs
Individuals New to Management
Individuals who are new to management participate in a series of sessions, with a focus on topics including GHS strategy, conscious leadership, the patient experience, selecting talent, budgeting, financial management, and human resources. Since these sessions are grouped as a cohort, new managers have the added benefit of creating a network among their peers.
Individuals With Prior Management Experience
Individuals with prior management experience attend an initial session focusing on GHS strategy, conscious leadership, and the patient experience. Using a CBT (Computer-based training) format, experienced managers take part in learning sessions focused on specific GHS processes for selecting talent, human resources, budgeting, etc. These managers have the option of attending any classes in person to further hone their GHS leadership skills.
New Managers Resources
All GHS managers are assigned an Organization Development (OD) Consultant and a Human Resources (HR) Manager. These individuals work in conjunction with the new manager and their direct leader to address leadership challenges. Organization Development Consultants and Human Resources Managers are available as ongoing resources to support and coach individual managers and teams with an emphasis on creating and sustaining highly engaged teams throughout GHS.
